“Mom, you made me feel embarrassed, angry and sad – kinda all in one”
My heart sank into my stomach. I had just shamed my girl.
It wasn’t so much the words this time – although I am unfortunately no stranger to the sin of anger in my words. This time is was simply the tone.
Sharp, pointed and demeaning.
What were the last words that cut into your life? I bet you could tell me friend and I’m sorry for your heart.
This is exactly why God has so much to say about our words. The bible is packed full of warnings against how we choose to speak. We must pay attention!
Let’s look at 3 Reasons Words Matter to God.
Words are powerful
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. Prov 18:21
There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. Prov 12:18
But no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. James 3:8
A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Prov 15:1
Words can build us up or tear us down
Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. Eph 4:29
Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body. Prov 16:24
Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person. Col 4:6
What then, brothers? When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up. 1 Cor 14:26
Words have a lasting impact on us and others
But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person. Matt 15:18
I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak. Matt 12:36
Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin. Prov 13:3
The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. Luke 6:45
Thankfully God is abundantly gracious and offers us forgiveness when we fall short. He also offers us help from the Holy Spirit in this battle of our words. It is not a fight we can face on our own.
We need to continually submit our thoughts and words to the Lord and ask His strength to use them in a way to give Him Glory.
And friend if I’m near the end of my rope for the day with my pack of kiddos – here’s my bonus verse:
Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent. Prov 17:28
Ahh yes! So true 🙂
Lord thank you for your word. Thank you for the truth that you speak to our hearts. I pray Lord that you would reveal areas in our hearts and lives that we need to submit to your loving care. May we learn to pray, think and submit our words to you before they even come out of our mouths. I pray that when our words come forth, they would be filtered by you – for your Glory! Please help our speech to build others up instead of tear down. In Jesus name I pray.
Talk to you soon,
O Lord, You have pleaded the case for my soul;
You have redeemed my life.
